John Deere mowers, such as the 100 series riding mowers, feature a belt and pulley system. The belt transfers power from the engine to the spindles on which the cutting blades are mounted. A worn belt is a common issue with riding mowers and is the result of normal everyday use. Removal of the cutting deck is necessary to remove the belt from the pulleys.
Position the John Deere mower on a flat and level surface such as a driveway before starting to work. Leave the transmission in gear and set the parking brake. Lower the cutting deck to the lowest possible setting.
Pull the spring pin from the mower engagement drive cable located on the right side of the cutting deck. Use a pair of pliers if necessary to remove the spring clip. Determine if this is necessary based on a deck width greater than 42 inches. Pull the cable out and lift up to remove from the bracket. Remove the cable spring from the idler pulley bracket.
Disconnect the rear draft arm and adjustable lift links on both sides of the deck by removing the spring lock pins and washers. Set all parts aside for use later on.
Pull the spring pin and washer off the mower deck bracket and remove the front draft rod. Work the belt from around the engine pulley and slide the cutting deck from underneath the John Deere mower.
Loosen and remove the screws that hold the belt shields in place with a screwdriver. Loosen the bolts on the two pulleys on the left side with an adjustable wrench. Work the belt from around the pulleys and off the cutting deck. Take note of how the belt fits around the pulleys on the cutting deck before removal.
Install the new belt around the pulleys on the deck following the pattern of the old belt. Tighten the bolts on the two left pulleys with the adjustable wrench. Place the belt shields back over the pulleys on both sides of the deck and secure with screws.
Slide the cutting deck back under the John Deere mower. Connect the front draft rod back to the deck bracket and secure with a washer and spring clip. Work the belt around the engine pulley.
Connect the rear draft arm and adjustable lift links on both sides of the deck back to the mower frame with the spring lock pins and washers.
Slide the mower engagement drive cable under the mower belt and brake rod. Attach the cable spring on the end of the cable to the idler pulley bracket. Pull the drive cable forward, line up the black end of the cable with the bracket attached to the cutting deck, and release into the slot in the bracket. Secure the cable to the bracket with a spring clip.
